Minimum requirements

• Pentium computer
• 8 MB memory
• 4 MB free disk space (more recommended for larger collections of learning material; for example, Advanced English requires 50 MB)
• SVGA with resolution 800x600 (higher resolutions recommended)
• Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0 with Internet support. Note that some older installations may require an update to Common Controls Library (comctl32.dll)(see FAQ section below)
• Windows 2000: Some workarounds for incompatibilities with Windows 2000 are described here: SuperMemo 2000 in Windows 2000
• Windows ME: SuperMemo 2000 is not compatible with Windows ME; please download SuperMemo 99 to see performance problems of Windows ME; the same problems show up in SuperMemo 2000

Additional requirements

• to use HTML components or web updates: MS Internet Explorer 4.0 (or higher)(or shdocvw.dll and mshtml.dll libraries installed)
• to edit HTML WYSIWYG: a WYSIWYG HTML editor (e.g. Front Page 2000)
• to use e-mail options in incremental reading: MAPI-compatible e-mail software for Windows (you may experience problems when using Outlook Express; see FAQ below)
• to use sounds and video: sound board (e.g. for Advanced English, Cross Country, Video English, etc.)
• to use collections distributed on CD-ROM (e.g. Advanced English): 12-speed CD-ROM drive
• to use editable mind-maps: Mind Manager 3.0 (or higher)

Question:
I use E- mail function of SuperMemo through Help : Support : Technical support. My Outlook Express opens and then hangs up. How can I correct it?
Answer:
SuperMemo uses MAPI interface to send e-mail. To make sure Outlook complies with MAPI you need to do the following:

• Install Windows Messaging
• Set Outlook Express as your default email client
• Set Outlook Express as your default simple MAPI client (in Outlook Express Options check Make Outlook Express my default Simple MAPI client)

Question:
During an attempt to install SuperMemo, I have received the following two messages:

1. Cannot write to supermemo.ini
2. This control requires version 4.7 or greater of comctl32.dll

Answer:
The problems is with your comctl32.dll library in Windows. Old Windows 95 installations may contain an earlier version of this library. Please use the URL listed below to download a free update (about 500K; ver. 4.72). This will not only let you run SuperMemo but will also improve stability of other W95 and NT applications

You say that to use HTML component I need mshtml.dll and shdocvw.dll installed, but where can I find these files?
Answer:
These files come with Internet Explorer. If you have IE installed, you already have these files

Up-to-date Mshtml.dll and Shdocvm.dll files are needed to use the HTML component (#5026)

Question:
SuperMemo 2000 asks for Mshtml.dll and Shdocvm.dll libraries but I got them both in c:\windows\system folder. Is it a bug?
Answer:
You need to make sure that two other conditions are met: 

1. Your Windows is indeed running from c:\windows folder 
2. The files are up-to-date (not older than September 1997) 

Otherwise, SuperMemo will display the following message: "You need Mshtml.dll and Shdocvw.dll installed to use the HTML component". Note that depending on the system, these DLLs can also be located in System32 folder
