The Edit submenu on the main
menu makes it possible to add new elements, enrich them with
components (e.g. sounds or pictures), delete elements, edit elements, and more. The Edit
submenu is available only after you enter the middle level or the professional
level (with File : Level).
Here
are the options of the Edit submenu:
- Add a new item - add a new item to the current collection (Alt+A).
An item is an element that takes part in repetitions and
often has the question-answer form (see also: Topics vs. items).
The item is added to the current category (as selected in the category combo-box on the Tools
toolbar)
- Add a new article - add a new article to the current collection (Ctrl+Alt+N).
The article is pasted from the clipboard
- Add a new task - add a new task to the
current tasklist. Current tasklist is determined by the selection in the
rightmost combo on the Tools
toolbar.
To see the current tasklist, use the tasklist manager (e.g.
press F4)
- Import web pages (Shift+F8) - import learning material from Internet Explorer.
You can import the content or links to web pages currently opened in
Internet Explorer. If you have more than one copy of Internet Explorer
opened, you can import from many web pages at once. This option also makes
it possible to close instances of Internet Explorer that are no longer
needed (e.g. during or after page import)
- Import mail - import mail from MS Outlook into a series of topics
for incremental reading (see: Using
e-mail with SuperMemo)
- Add to category - add new elements to the current category (as
selected in the category combo on the Tools
toolbar)
- Item - add a new item to the current category (category hook
becomes the parent of the added item). The item will use the default
category template (originally, two HTML
text components forming a question and
an answer)
- Note - add a new note to the current category. A note is a
topic that uses the default topic template (originally, a single scaleable
HTML text
component). Use this option, e.g. with Alt+N, to type in rough
notes into your collection. You can then process your notes in the process of
incremental reading
- HTML Note - add a new HTML note to the current category. This
option is the same as Add to category : Note (above), but it
always uses the default HTML topic template (same as the original Article
template)
- Article - paste an article to SuperMemo. The article will be
added to the current category. It will use
the default topic template. Originally, this
template is based on a single HTML component. The
text currently stored in the clipboard will be pasted. You can then
process the pasted text with incremental reading.
Most often you will use this option to paste portion of text from your
web browser. After you select some
text, press Ctrl+C, switch back to SuperMemo (e.g. with Alt+Tab)
and press Ctrl+Alt+N
- HTML file - import an HTML file saved on your hard disk and
place it as a reading topic in the current category. If you have saved
the file with Internet Explorer, the
accompanying files will be imported as well (pictures, scripts, frame
pages, etc.)
- Web page - add to your collection a link to a web page for easy access directly from SuperMemo.
Check the box Open automatically to make sure the live page loads
as soon as you enter the element linking to the page
- E-mail - add an e-mail text for incremental
reading (use this option only if you cannot import mail
automatically from MS Outlook). It is recommended that you use e-mail headers for easiness
of responding to e-mail fragments. For example, in Outlook Express, you can
click Forward to get access to the e-mail text with the header.
SuperMemo will use the address that follows
[mailto: in responding to e-mail fragments.
Here is an exemplary header

- Add to tasklist - add new elements to the current tasklist
as
selected in the tasklist combo box on the Tools
toolbar
- Task - add a new task to the currently selected tasklist
- Article - add a new article to the current tasklist. The task will
use the default task template. The text component in the task template will
paste the text

selection in the tasklist combo on the Tools
toolbar. To view the current tasklist, choose Tools :
Tasklist (F4)
- HTML file - import an HTML file saved on your hard disk and
place it as a reading task on the current reading list
- URL - add a URL to the current tasklist for easy access to
web pages directly from SuperMemo. You can use this option to save space and import the
full article only then when
its reading turn comes
- E-mail - add a new e-mail text to the currently selected
tasklist (see: Using e-mail with SuperMemo)
- Create category - open the Category Wizard to create a new category.
Select the location of the category in the contents window, choose its name
and, optionally, change its templates. In those quick three steps, you can
easily add new categories to your collection
- Create tasklist - create a new category (as with Create category
above) and add a tasklist rooted in that category
- Add components - add new components
in the element window. This is an alternative way
of building your elements. More often you will use the Compose toolbar in the
main window:
- Image - image component for displaying
pictures (BMP, JPEG, GIF, WMF, etc.). Note that you may prefer to
simply paste pictures to SuperMemo. SuperMemo will create an image
component for you
- Sound - sound component for playing sound
files (WAV, MID, MP3, Real Audio, etc.)
- HTML - HTML component that can be used to
display HTML files. Note that you may prefer to use ready-made HTML
templates or paste your texts to SuperMemo (e.g. with Ctrl+Alt+N)
- Rich text - rich text
component using the RTF format
- Text - plain text
component
- Spell - spell-pad component for spelling
exercises
- Script - script component for animating
other components (see: Using scripts)
- Other - bring up the Compose
toolbar
with all other components that can be created by drag&drop
- Edit text
- Edit title - edit the text of the element
currently displayed in the element window
- Edit first question - edit the first text component that is visible at question time
- Edit first answer - edit the first text
component that is marked as an answer
- Edit all - switch all text components to editing mode
- Add pronunciation - add a
word-transcription pair to the phonetic transcription registry (only if this registry has
been created with Tools : Options
: Language)
- Apply filter - process all texts used by
all elements in the collection with a filter file (e.g. replace a
set of strings with another set of string, remove delimited comments, move delimited
comments to the comments registry, etc.)
- Delete element - delete the currently
displayed element
- Delete components - delete all components
in the currently displayed element
- Menus - make it possible to open currently
available context menus for individual windows or components:
